Fathers Day Drags Meremere 2010

Father’s Day Drags is one of the best car events in the year. Dennis and were both up like we’d wet the bed on Sunday morning 5:00am sharp and happily rapidly headed to Meremere to work our little butts off and have a great day. As we rocked in we caught up with fellow AMCC members who we felt we hadn’t seen for ages, adorned ourselves with the ultra cool 2010 Father’s Day T-Shirts, set up the VIP area and got our bearings for the day.

A few members were surprised that Den hadn’t bought his 67 Camaro and I hadn’t bought my 69 Camaro, but instead we had my GTS every day driver. They were even more surprised that I wasn’t going to race the GTS. So last minute I decided “bugger it” I’ll see how she goes and caught the scrutineering just in time.

I felt a bit bad because Dennis has been working Father’s Day Drags for over 11 years; and never raced and here I am only on my fourth year and I’m racing, but as you can imagine I quickly got over the guilt feeling, and had to find a helmet. Thanks to Brent Marsh, I had a helmet, admittedly it was way too big and every time I turned my head quickly the lights went out, as I stared into the back of the helmet, and the clasp under the chin was so old school it kept digging into my neck giving me a hickey by the end of the day, but I had a helmet and I was ready to race and that’s all that mattered.

Every time I had a minute I did my best to do my part at the VIP stand, and got to see the entertainment put on by the two Big Ben Holden’s catching on fire during their smoke up; the fire display, was planned wasn’t it?

We had such a brilliant time, and of course the highlight for me, was taking first place in the ladies. It was such a buzz racing friends like Natalie and to go into the final lap with Sheryl, who I have watched and admired over the years was way cool. Thanks Delwyn for the ladies prize and for all you dirty minded members who wanted to know what was in the “girly” parcel and if Den and I would need more prize oil with it, I hate to disappoint you as you can see from the photo, no oil required.

The other day when we got the AMCC August Newsletter there was a write up about the need for 2011 Easter Car Show $300 sponsorship, I said to Den at the time “I’d really like to try and sponsor” but things have been a little financially tough this year, so I didn’t think we could do it. But when I opened the prize money envelope and found $300, I thought it must be fate, so I would like to give the AMCC back its $300 and Sponsor the 2011 Easter Car Show, the cheques in the mail!

Thanks so much for making Father’s Day Drags an incredible day, and we’ll be back next year.
