Palmerston North Hot Rod Display and Swapmeet 6-8 August 2010 Club Run

What an awesome weekend!! Friday the 6th August 10am Bay Rodders gathered at Jimmy’s Joint in Te Puke to cruise together to the Palmerston North Hot Rod Display and Swapmeet. The first fine has to go to the McGrath’s who forgot their tickets and had to race back home and join the run as it cruised out of Te Puke. But Credit has to go to Leanne and Steve for making the wise decision to leave the Ford behind and bring the reliable Holden.

The turnout was a little disappointing but everyone that was there was in especially high spirits and as agreed wore wigs for the cruise; we had all the colours of the rainbow from pink, red, blue, purple etc. Leanne had organized one of the most hilarious games I have ever played called “No Names”. Every member put $5 into the kitty, and was given a box of matches. From the moment the cruise left at 10:30am no one was allowed to refer to another person by their proper name, if you did you acquired a match stick. The person with the most match sticks was deemed the loser and their prize was a bar of the specialty chocolate named “Yellow”, the person who made it through the day with the least match sticks was deemed the winner and they got the kitty of money. It was actually really difficult, you should try it, and the alternative name calling was hilarious we had people being referred to as Elvis, Model A Boy, Afro Boy, Bob Marley, Rasta Man, Mr Wobbly, Bitch, Chuck, The King, Pink, Rag Top, El Presidente and the list just goes on.

The cruise went really well, when we stopped for lunch at Wairakei, the faces of the BP staff were like a Visa Ad; “priceless” as they cracked up laughing at us when we all rocked in wearing wigs, and tooting and blowing horns, after refueling our cars and our tummies we headed for Waiouru. At this point the cruise took a turn for the worse. Miriam was suffering from a migraine and the windy Desert Road, eventually took its toll and she had to throw up in her hat, and that was OK, but then Nellie decided to throw the contents of the hat out his window, not realizing Miriam’s window was already open, and so the wind simply caught the contents and threw it straight back at Nellie and the entire inside of his car – ewww!!

After a refueling and cleaning stop in Waiouru the group decided the next stop should be the Ohingaiti pub between Taihape and Huntersville for a brew. After passing a lot of Manukau Rodders on the side of the road, it was at the pub we realized how well or how badly members were doing in the “No Names” game with “no nuts Lynne” and “Rasta man” having to give up the matches and start recording their ever going tally in a notebook, and Nellie setting a light to all his matches in frustration and “Jackarse” starting a second row of matches on the Plymouth dashboard – she so sucked at this game – it was hilarious!!

Then we were on the road again to our last stop Palmerston North. On our arrival we encountered our next challenge; we were told we could not have the accommodation arrangement that had been so thoroughly organized by the McGraths’. What they failed to tell us was the motel was in receivership, and so we ended scattered around the motel, and as fate would have it Ken ended up with the master key to complex D, which was handy when we needed more chairs, but little did I know that would eventually back fire on Den and myself on Saturday night.

Little did we know that organizing dinner was going to bring on the next challenge, I rang Hell Pizza to organize three Greed pizza’s and one pandemonium pizza (an apt name really – oh the irony) that had to be gluten free for our illustrious leader Deano. I double checked and triple checked the gluten free over the phone, and when I put the phone down I said to Den I hope they don’t screw up the gluten free! Anyway the pizza’s all arrived and in true form, they were devoured in good time, and then the Hell Pizza delivery guy turns up with the Pandemonium pizza, but we said we already got it, “oh yeah – but this one’s gluten free” with that all our faces dropped and poor Deano was going to be in for an uncomfortable weekend! Good on Hells Pizza for refunding the money, but really NOT good enough, you could put someone in hospital with that dis-service.

Despite all our challenges and hurdles we did not give up on having a great weekend, and so off we all cruised to the Palmerston North club rooms to get registered and meet and greet our hosts. When we got back from registration the “No Names” winner was announced, congratulations Ken on winning the kitty, and the LOSERS were a tie between “no nuts Lynne” and “Jackarse” they both completely sucked at this game.

Saturday morning we were all up before the sparrows and off before the crowds arrived, so just after 7am we were all under cover and on display. The swapmeet was huge, there was a lot of the usual junk, but there were also a lot of good bargains to be had, the band was great, the prizes were plentiful and excellent, the fire ups were loud, and the number and caliber of cars on display was truly impressive, it just made you want to sell the house get a bigger section, get a bigger garage and buy some more cars. The fact that we could display our cars inside was also a real treat as the weather was a little dodgy but it held for the day which was great. All in all the event was extremely well run. But the public still have a lot to learn about how to behave around cars!! While we were strolling around the swap meet some ignoramous scratched the guard and running board on the Chesham Roadster!! Yet another challenge, so from that moment on we stayed around our cars and had to remind numerous people not to touch, lean or play with the cars, gosh it can make you mad.

After 2pm we left the swap meet, and cruised off to impress the Cam’s parents neighbours as we all rumbled through their cul-de-sac to pick Cam’s parents up and take them to the Route 66 café in Foxton. This café is worth a stop the parking is good, the layout is cool and the food is great, Ross even had to get a fellow member to hold his daughter who was trying to eat his brownie. Then it was back to Palmerston North to do some final shopping and get ready for a night of dining and dancing at the Club Palmerston Bowling Club.

Included in our registration were taxi chits, this was such an excellent idea, and we really appreciated the fact that the cost of the taxis there and back were covered in our registrations, it just meant that everyone could relax and enjoy themselves and not have to worry about organizing sober drivers.

We had a brilliant night, the food was fantastic, the music was great, and the AB’s bet the Wallabies 20 to 10, what more could you ask for. During the evening we discovered that our members had many hidden talents this included Connie’s amazing ability to make a very life like penis out of a tea towel, and within no time at all many members in various clubs were mastering the skill of penis puppetry with their napkins, as for Leanne’s grape throwing capabilities this still needs a lot of work, but I think her gogo dancing on the table with Kim was truly impressive, and the break dancing challenge on the dance floor was absolutely incredible if I do say so myself.

Sunday morning came quickly and I wasn’t moving as quickly as I usually do. I went to retrieve a coke from the fridge when I found Den’s clothes in the fridge? It appears that the D Block Warden Ken has given the Poynton’s access to our room Saturday night, but we came back too soon and they scarpered leaving our bed in disarray. It was said Cam was giggling like a girl because he thought Leanne (given her history) would get the blame, but nup, all we can say to the Poynton’s is you’re time is coming but personally I think you handling Den’s used jockey’s is probably punishment enough.

Just before 9am we were at Club Palmerston ready for breakfast and the prizing giving. Bay Rodders had been accused of removing a table cloth on Saturday night and had been asked to kindly return it to our astonishment? But the Manukau Custom Club soon presented the signed /graffiti thank you table cloth to the Palmerston North Club which was a brilliant idea.

Breakfast was fantastic, and the prize giving was very generous! Bay Rodders were awarded…

  • Best Ford Chesham’s Roadster
  • Best Other Deano’s Buick
  • Chuck’s Choice Phil’s Cadillac
  • Best Club representation

Other spot prizes were also won by Kim, Leanne, Garth, Ken …

Within the Bay Rodders group two trophies were awarded to two members on the run, sponsored by AllTranz Driver Training. They were…

  • Best Break Dancer Cathi (yes me)
  • Best Origami Penis Connie

Once we’d all done our farewells it was back on the road and back to Tauranga after a fantastic weekend for some much needed rest. Thank you Palmerston North for a great event, we will be back, that’s a promise not a threat ha ha!!
